The gentle host of the year

According to the Chinese horoscope, the Year of the Black Water Rabbit occurs only once every 60 years, so this year is sure to be exceptional. The Chinese believe that people born in the Year of the Rabbit are gentle and intelligent. They are family-oriented, friendly, so they are loved by many people and are the soul of the company. This is exactly how the rabbit is depicted on the new coin dedicated to this year’s host.

The Black Water Rabbit brings good luck, which is why the rabbit is held in high regard and has much symbolism in different cultures. At different times a rabbit’s foot or tail was used as an amulet of good luck and protection. It is still believed that a gift rabbit brings harmony, friendly relations, and warmth to the home. To convey these characteristics of the rabbit, we created a coin that defies time. It is made of aged silver, and craftsmen applied a special coating to the coin that protects against wear and tear.

Representative of the Earth element
Even though this year’s host is a water rabbit, this cute animal actually represents the Earth element. This is why the rabbit is always associated with constancy, cool head and intelligence. The element of water makes these characteristics of the rabbit stand out even more and fills the rabbit with intuition and ability to adapt in different situations.

To highlight this year’s unique symbol that visits us so rarely the masters of the Lithuanian Mint created the rabbit’s image by combining many small mirrors, each representing a drop of water. Together they create an image of an exceptionally beautiful rabbit that shines in the light.

The obverse of the coin features a stylised coat of arms of Niue. The crossed clubs at the bottom, katoua, are the symbol of the Niue island, and the motto of the island is above them, ‘atua Niue tukulagi’. Each coin is ready for gifting – packed in a special wooden box.
