Illustrious tiger
First released for 1996, the long-running Australian Lunar Coin Series celebrates the 12 animals of the lunar zodiac. These 2022 coins celebrate the tiger, whose rule over every third year in the 12-year lunar calendar is said to bestow courage, confidence and charm on people born under its influence in 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010 and 2022.
Coloured tiger reverse
The coin portrays a coloured representation of a tiger standing on a peak with its head turned towards its tail. The fearless animal’s open jaw features razor sharp canine teeth. Included in the design is the Chinese character for ‘tiger’, the inscription ‘TIGER 2022’ and The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark.

Accompanied by a numbered certificate of authenticity, the coin comes in a luxury red display case with a magnetic lid and an illustrated shipper. When aligned with other shippers from the series, the illustration forms a diorama depicting all 12 animals in the order they finished The Great Race, a traditional Chinese story about the creation of the lunar calendar.
