2013 $1 Australian Kingfishers – Yellow-Billed Kingfisher Stamp & Coin Cover PNC
The Perth Mint and Australia Post are pleased to present an Australian Kingfisher coin and stamp cover featuring the Yellow-Billed Kingfisher. The aptly named Yellow-Billed Kingfisher (Syma torotoro) has an olive-grey back and wings, and a golden head and shoulders, with black spots towards the back of the neck.
Its range in Australia is limited to the northern tip of the Cape York Peninsula, where the remoteness and inaccessibility make sightings relatively rare. The Yellow-billed Kingfisher departs Cape York for New Guinea during the dry season, returning to Australia to breed at the onset of the wet season.
It nests in the arboreal mounds created by termites, constructing its nest just prior to breeding. Issued as legal tender under the authority of the Government of Tuvalu, the uncirculated aluminium bronze coin is housed in a beautifully designed card that fits inside a similarly illustrated envelope with a circular window revealing the coin’s reverse and obverse designs.
The coin’s revers features an irresistible image of a Yellow-billed Kingfisher perched on a branch. The design also features the inscription YELLOW-BILLED KINGFISHER SYMA TOROTORO $1. Affixed to the envelope is an official Australia Post $3.00 stamp. The stamp is postmarked for the first day of issue and the envelope includes Australia Post’s Seal of Authenticity and official number.
