Celebrating the 200th anniversary of Queen Victoria’s birth, this outstanding 1/4oz gold coin depicts the Queen’s effigy that appeared on Australian sovereign and half-sovereign coins from 1857 until 1870.
Queen Victoria is credited with playing a pivotal role in Britain’s progress during a time of rapid technological and social change. Born Alexandrina Victoria on 24 May, 1819, at Kensington Palace, London, she ascended the throne in 1837 at age 18.
She was active until her death on 22 January 1901, after reigning for almost 65 years. In that time, Britain’s Empire had expanded to cover about one fifth of the Earth’s surface, making Queen Victoria empress to almost a quarter of the world’s population.
The coin’s reverse depicts Royal Mint engraver Leonard Charles Wyon’s effigy of Queen Victoria with wreaths of banksia in her hair. The inscription ‘QUEEN VICTORIA 200th ANNIVERSARY’ and two stylised wattle branches are also featured in the design.
