In traditional Chinese culture, the serpent-like dragon is revered as a divine creature and potent symbol of power. For thousands of years, it was associated with the emperor and his descendants, symbolising wisdom, enlightenment, and benevolence. The dragon was also said to command water and rain, and by ensuring abundant harvests became a powerful symbol of wealth and good fortune. Chinese art often depicts a pair of dragons chasing or fighting over a pearl, a symbol of wisdom and immortality.
This stunning coin portrays two dragons on a background of clouds, representing their heavenly realm. The mythical creatures surround a precision carved mother of pearl centerpiece featuring a three-dimensional 19-carat gold representation of the Chinese character for ‘dragon’. As well as the inscriptions ‘YEAR OF THE DRAGON’, the reverse includes a ‘P125’ mintmark signifying The Perth Mint’s 125th anniversary. Also included is the coin’s weight, purity, and year-date.
The obverse portrays the Dan Thorne effigy of His Majesty King Charles III, and the coin’s monetary denomination.
