Marking the 150th anniversary of the discovery of the Welcome Stranger natural nugget, this flawlessly struck 1/4oz gold proof coin features a depiction of the historic find.
One of the biggest known alluvial gold nuggets in the world and the largest found in Australia, the Welcome Stranger was discovered in 1869. Weighing 72 kilos and containing almost 2,300oz of gold, it sold for about 10,000 British pounds, the equivalent to millions of dollars today. The Welcome Stranger nugget was featured on The Perth Mint’s first ever proof coin set of 1986.
Historic Nugget Design
the coin includes a representation of Stuart Devlin’s depiction of the Welcome Stranger gold nugget as it appeared in The Perth Mint’s 1986 Australian Nugget 1oz gold coin. Also included in the design are the inscriptions ‘WELCOME STRANGER 1869’, ‘AUSTRALIAN NUGGET’, ‘2019 1/4oz 9999 GOLD’, and The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark.
Presentation Packaging
The coin is housed in a classic display case with a timber lid. Packaged with an illustrated shipper, each coin is accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
