The bloodshed of World War I ended in 1918 at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. To mark the cessation of hostilities 100 years ago, The Perth Mint offers this carefully considered numismatic tribute honouring the courage and sacrifice of those who suffered the conflict’s unremitting brutality at Gallipoli, in the Middle East and on the Western Front.
Symbols of Peace & Remembrance
The coin’s reverse portrays a dove which has for millennia symbolised peace. The bird is carrying a poppy, another poignant symbol in its beak. Red poppies were the first flowers to bloom in the devastated battlefields of Western Europe and soon became universally associated with the act of remembrance.
Presentation Packaging & Numbered Certificate
This very special commemorative coin is housed with an emotive presentation envelope featuring jubilant soldiers of WWI as armistice is announced. The official Australia Post $1 stamp depicts an armistice badge that was produced as part of a fundraising effort to support celebrations marking the end of the war and the first day cover has the postmark of 2 October 2018, Canberra Act 2600.
The background photograph on the envelope shows a group of young women on a Sydney street rejoicing at the news of the war’s end.
