To celebrate the birth of Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Cambridge, The Perth Mint is honoured to commemorate the occasion with the release of special 1oz silver proof coin and a 1/4oz gold proof coin.
Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana was born on 2 May 2015 at Saint Mary’s Hospital in London weighing 3.7 kilograms. She is the second child of Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and a great granddaughter of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
Born fourth in line to the throne after her grandfather, the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Cambridge, and her older sibling His Royal Highness Prince George, Princess Charlotte was bestowed the title of Her Royal Highness by the reigning Monarch, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. She is the first princess to be born into the British monarchy in 25 years. The last was the daughter of Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, Princess Eugenie of York, in 1990. The Princess is the first major royal who cannot be overtaken in the line of succession by any future younger brothers following changes to the monarchy's rules to remove gender bias.
In keeping with tradition, the birth of Princess Charlotte was greeted by a 41-gun Royal Salute in Hyde Park, and a 62-gun salute at the Tower of London. A proclamation of the Royal Birth announcing her arrival was displayed on a gilded easel outside the gates of Buckingham Palace, along with a tweet from Kensington Palace on the social media platform Twitter.
Following the registration of her birth, the Home Secretary and the Queen's Private Secretary officially informed State and Commonwealth representatives and overseas dignitaries of the presence of the future princess.
The coins are struck by The Perth Mint from 1oz of 99.9% pure silver and 1/4oz of 99.99% pure gold in proof quality. Both releases are issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965.
Set to be a timeless reminder of this historic birth, The Perth Mint will release no more than 5,000 silver and 1,000 gold coins.
DESIGNS
The reverse of each coin depicts a sculpted portrait of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge cradling and gazing lovingly at their newborn baby, with HRH Prince George by their side. The image is encircled by a sculpted ribbon tied in a bow. The inscription CELEBRATING THE BIRTH OF THE ROYAL BABY, the 2015 year-date and The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark, are also included in the design.
The obverse of each coin depicts the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the 2015 year-date and monetary denomination.
