2011 marks the 10th Anniversary of the International Year of Volunteers (IYV+10) and is an opportunity for Australia to join a global effort to promote community participation through volunteering. Australia is running a number of events and releasing a National Volunteering Strategy, to recognise and acknowledge the contribution of more than five million volunteers who each give their time, energy and expertise to support their communities.
Volunteers do everything from helping disadvantaged children learn to read, to providing assistance in times of natural disaster, to preservation of our environment.
IYV+10 activities aim to raise the profile of volunteering and increase the number of people participating in volunteering activities.
The anniversary year will culminate in two United Nations General Assembly sessions dedicated to volunteerism and the release of the first-ever report on the State of the World's Volunteerism.
